Comms are an important part of your kit. Intersquad comms and squad to base comms are invaluable for being able to share and receive information. Just being able to monitor local traffic can tell you tons about what is going on in your area.
My standard kit starts with a Baofeng UV5R with an extended battery and the following based on the need:
-relocating antenna cable
-hi gain folding antenna
-roll up J-pole field antenna
-external Mic
-active ear pro with comms interface cable
-ear buds
I also like to keep a write in the rain notebooks with a raid reference chart and a SALT/SALUTE cheat sheet along with a marker and pencil for notes and message taking.
At the end of the day practice with your mates, establish group SOP's for your use, and keep it short and concise.
